I too would go for a timber floor.
Lots of work in a steel floor but if you decide on steel, overhead welding is a piece of the proverbial.
I'd weld overhead anyday in preference to down hand, especially as you need that floor plate hard down on the cross members and as Cam suggested, a rolling weight is the easiest way.
With the trailer inverted, you'll then need a method to push the plate UP against the cross members.
Once you start welding, the plate will have a mind of its own and you need big weight to hold it.
Don't forget, your welding skills will be tested when reinstating that rope rail. Must be one of the hardest jobs to get looking original.

I think if you get a price on 5mm chequer plate timber will start to look pretty attractive.
Done well with the sand blasting, but get that primer on quick smart before she turns orange.

Even if the timber was more expensive I would still go with timber. LOL.... and there's nothing wrong with putting tractors up on the timber. Also Pat you may need to find another McGrath to checkout how to rear should be,maybe Paddy's... Cheers James.
