Restored and blistering down the highway at 38mph, probably won't need a gearbox with diffs like that.

Austen and Butta operated coal mines around Lithgow (also Avon mine in the Wollongong area) . As this truck has 38mph diffs I assume it was likely used as a dump truck on site carrying coal from the valley up to the storage area. I recall a story in a magazine, maybe Truck and Bus that featured several Macks doing this job.

.Seeing as
...............
The old Mack and the modified KW wrecker both live in the same house............
if the Mack came from Austen & Butta.......one may assume the Mack chain drive rear end fitted to the KW
also may be from Austen & Butta......................
Just an assumption , mind you.........................

The 38 mph diffs were the standard fitting of the day as they did 58 mph with that 6 speed box because it was equal to a double overdrive in the top cog. It was the same ratio as the Quad box with O.D. in 5th plus hi split in the Quad. The common ratio was 7.49 although there were a lot of 8 point something ratios fitted to give about 50 mph. I have an x Western transport one that used to do the Perth run on the 7.49. cheers - Kav.

Just looking at the interior shots of that old Mack, looks like possibly amongst the first of the tilt bonnets??
Looks (to me anyway), like the same basic cab as the Flintstone, but the length of the bonnet has me thrown a bit, caption says it's a 237 has only the single air cleaner (std) and with those diffs (55.000lbs??). If std configuration was R600, was the R700 just the heavier specced version?
From memory, Express Freight had much the same sort of this on H/Haulage, but had the 6 speed Lo-Lo box, but IDSTBC.
Either way, may make a good project for someone.

.Dave
...
...Me not being a Mack expert.....i will hazard a guess...........
The R700 maybe being a heavier spec.....used the longer bonnet to cover up the alternative donks.......
the offered KT cummins took up all of that bonnet length..........
If you only wanted the Mack 6 cylinder or the V8, in this particular model......there was a fair bit of left over space .........
Hows that sound....?????
