Spotted this a while back.........................
Autocar / Allison box /671GM
R/H conversion.........cab lifted for pto fitment on top of the Allison box to run the walking floor..............
Talking about old 671s...........a little story...........
Next door to BM & G quarry, was Styles quarry,a relative small but very deep hole.
the haul road from the quarry floor was a narrow ledge that wound the wall a coupla times
before reaching the top. Dragging the rock up this haul road was a few old LeTauneau (spellin suspect ???)
Stick model super C (or older) rear dumps powered by old 671 Jimmys.
The steering sticks operated like a dozer, pull the r/h stick to go right etc
also a foot brake for each side (used only when travelling slow or you were in a heap of trouble )
Another clutch for starting & changing gear in the manual box etc.
Now when you were pulling & grabbed the r/h stick to turn right,, if ,, you lifted your foot off the gas
then she swung to the left. Hence the term cross steering goin down hill or on the over run.
Soooo...keeping things on the narrow haul road you had to be on the ball, other wise over the side you
went.......and they didnt call them WIDOW MAKERS for nuthing.
Now the old 671s had a straight out pipe that came through the bonnett & was about 4 foot long.
They sounded super great about a mile away, but standin close to them was deafning. AAAhhhh
sweet music, you might say..
