Engineering Question
Conditions: A backhoe weighing 22 tons is on top of a lowboy trailer and heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway in Alberta. The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a criss-cross pattern layered at 1 foot vertical spacing.
Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast do you have to be going to slice the bridge in half?
(Assume no effect for head wind and no braking by the driver)

N.B. I couldn't solve it either . . . but who cares; the pictures are great!

What year did electric turn signals become compulsory in Australia?

All I can find is USA made it compulsory to have a lamp type signal after 1 Jan 1958.

Many cars had them back to the thirties, remember the pommy turn signals in the door pillar? They were not compulsory and many cars relied on hand signals. Early Holdens had no blinkers.

I can remember doing my driving test in 1963 and that was the year hand signals were eliminated from the test requirements for cars with electric signals - there would have been a lot of no-blinker cars remaining on the road and if you did your test in one of them you still had to wave your arm. Trucks had to have both turn signals and a mechanical arm (in Victoria at least) for another couple of years.

This is an excellent question. Also, were cars and trucks mandated at the same time?

IF the car had flashing indicators, orange was mandated at the rear from 1959 on. Hence, 1959 Chevs in Australia had the teardrop indicators hanging from the fins.

Newest car I've seen WITHOUT indicators was an EJ Holden standard. They came out during 1962. A mate was fitting a NOS conversion kit to one around 1990.

I would be only guessing for new vehicles but I know the BCC bus fleet was retrofitted with blinkers in 1963/4 year according to the documents I have.

FE Holdens didn't have blinkers on the front but FC did, but looking at Qld Tpt Regs

That is about what I figured - looks like 66.

When did they do away with mechanical signals on trucks. I remember I had to have the arm still in 67 even though the truck was fitted with blinkers.
