Swishy,
Only guessing, either found by trial to be the best set up for smooth
operation of the steering assembly, or to enable cab tilting with the
steering wheel in any position.

Neil, I tried that on my flash HZ wagon years ago, I was surprised how much jump and rattle there was on the wheels, experts said that was normal, they were designed to run with the vehicle weight on them, a set of rollers like a dyno might give a better indication. I spent b a lt of time and money but never cured my 80-90 k vibration.
I am hopping Ratty for your sake the tyres are the cause, like ripples on a dirt road, one becomes two becomes 3 etc,.

The HQ plus series had a real flexible rear trans/engine cross member that could amplify a slight out of balance of the driveline. Had a Q wagon that had the same issue.
