Swishy, I've used the electrolytic bath, works slick. The caustic soda works better because it's more basic, also it deals with grease and paint to a certain extent, but the washing soda works fine, as does baking soda in a pinch. The bigger the anode surface, the faster it works. I've got a tin knocker buddy who has plenty of 18 and 20 guage scrap (anything thinner than 20 disappears pretty fast in the bath) so I've got mucho material. If you've got two smaller pieces, just join them up with a few self-tapping sheet metal screws and voilá, a big piece. I haven't bothered with a battery, just a little ten amp trickle charger does the job, but for big pieces, more current is better, so add in the batteries and a bigger charger. Good electrical connections to anode and cathode are essential - when you see the little bubbles of hydrogen forming on the work, you're in business. Watch where you dump your smokes, 'cause it will flash. You can re-use the solution for the next project, and when it gets too black and gunky, find a patch in the paddock where the grass isn't doing too well and dump on a shot of your iron rich fertilizer.

If this seems like too much work, you can just dump your rusty piece into a tub of trailer acid (alloy brightener? subject of much talk in another thread) and clean everything to the bare metal. But that's a whole nother discussion. And the electrolytic is a lot cheaper.

Well wadayano. I got a very full progress report a few months back with one pair of cylinders ready to go. The corrosion turned out to be far worse than anyone anticipated so there was a lot of material to be replaced to make the water jacket good. Apparently there is another type of welding rod that he is playing with due to the scarcity of the original ones.



Pictures show the welded area after a phosphoric acid wash, and then painted.
