Pleased to report that there has been some movement at the station. It turned out to be a much bigger job than anticipated, with some parts of the water jackets wafer thin and porous. So remedial work is back on the priority list and is in hand.

Been following this post with interest, especially the cleaning/removing of rust and scale from engine parts.

Sure are many varied ways of dealing with stripping back to bare metal. Which brings me to a query, although related, is not strictly adhering to the given topic

I have used the Hydrocloric acid bath myself, was OK except it coated everything in the shed with a fine coating, including my own lungs probably!

I like to use the old molasses bath, chuck your parts in and get a general idea of how it's going by the amount of scum rising to the surface. Of course it dies take some time, but you can safely dunk your hands in it as well as once you have finished with the mixture, weaken it down even more and feed your native bushes with it. The Banksia's/ bottlebrushes love it! I even sprayed a newly laid seeded lawn.

I have heard that both the Hydrochloric acid as well as the molasses bath can be given a kick along with the addition of a slow charge running through them. I was up at a mates place at Lancefield a few months ago, scrounging some parts. He had some old tractor parts bubbling away in a bath, had a battery charger hooked up to a pair of 12 volt batteries (series? parallel?), told me he leaves them in for 10=12 hours at a time, depending on how bad the scale/rust is.

He did tell me what the solution he was cooking in was made from, but I'd forgotten. So, does this addition of current work with the molasses bath? And if so, any special precautions you have to use? Would rather use it (molasses) than any types of soda/acid going around as I think it's a bit too savage around here.
Cheers, Dave_64
