Grandad the version I was brought up with was

If you can laugh at yourself the world laughs with you
If you can’t the world laughs at you

That’s why the Irish tell more Irish jokes than anybody else

When I was about twenty a workmate bought a new Mini. He was at a loose end for something to do in his spare time so he bought a 1928 Model A Ford to have something to work on.

All my life I have had to work on whichever car I had and often on others in the family just to keep them running. For the past few years my Wife and I have had reliable cars that need almost no attention and now I am restoring old cars and trucks that break down or need work quite often.
Am I a glutton for punishment, lor just stupid?

By the way I have been interested in old vehicles since my teenage years.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Morris, the newer cars are basically boring, they just do what is required of them and lack the pleasure gained from being able to bring an older vehicle back to running condition - even when things don't always run as they should!

Occasionally I have periods of minimal activity (I've been experiencing one of these for the last month or so ) and find it hard to understand how dull life must be for those who do nothing all the time . . . um, shall I watch television, er, read a book maybe, or go for a walk, visit friends who are probably sitting doing nothing similarly???

At least we can potter around in our sheds when we feel like it and sod the rest of 'em! Does anyone really care whether we achieve anything or not? Bugger them, move on to the next little task and keep trying.

WE will enjoy the end result and who cares if they can't understand what keeps us going . . . :)

A sharer's lament:=

She was a good cook

and as good cooks go, she went.

I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!
