Fill,
If you had been working at Bedford, they would have been the best truck in the world by now and out-selling all other makes ten-to-one. They would still be in business, instead of having become uneconomic and being taken over by Isuzu (who are part of General Motors, as Bedford was)

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Hi all
I am after a bit of help. When I got the truck, there was a spare dip stick under the seat. I want to make sure I have the right one. The mechanic said to go by the manual. I filled up the diff today and it took a lot less than the book said. I also filled up the gear box that was very close. The manual also said to check the engine with the dip stick. The truck is a Bedford J 2 engine is a 214, first reg 1967. Another thing in the manual that is a bit confusing- it has three recommended capacity's. Does refill mean there is still oil in the engine after the sump plug has been taken out? Any way I have given you a drawing of my dip stick. The dimensions might be hard to read 232 mm full 247 mm add. Any help would be good. For those that are not members my ph is 0467531875. Thanks in advance cheers Fill.

Fill, basically the refill (10 pts) should show correct level on the stick when poured in and before starting
Cheers Steve

Diff oil takes a long time to get into the gears inside the hemisphere.......so check again after a day,and top up to level.

Fill, the engine oil capacities go like this-
Total- is a new engine, completely dry.
Refill- is for just changing the oil, but not the filter.
Refill with filter- is for when you change the engine oil and filter.

The difference between the the total and refil capacities is the oil that will be left in the oil galleries, pockets in the head, etc.

The different dipsticks may be for different applications of the same engine. A heavier rated truck may need more oil than a lighter one because it is working harder, and needs the extra cooling capacity.

Thanks dieseldog that makes sense now. the Penrite specialist did not know either. One more to go. No joke whats the length of my dip stick. Would all dip sticks be the same in Bedford 214 engines. Cheers Fill

If my "Oil Expert" didn't know the difference in those 3 figures, I'd be finding a new "Oil Expert".

Be especially careful with Penrith, their oil is good but their marketing and sales are hopeless.

To an uneducated person, their HPR 30 and HPR 40 may read like SAE 30 and SAE 40, but they are actually 20W60 and 20W70. Countless lawnmower engines die every year because of this...

Fill, stick 12 & 1/2 pints in the old girl, try both dipsticks ( I assume they're different). whichever one reads "Full" is the Winner..

You can have different Dipsticks to suit Different Sumps.
i found out the hard way many years ago with My backhoe. The wrong dipstick said "full" Ended up grabbing a bearing..
Cost Me 2 Crankshafts in less than a 100 hours..
