Pauly,
She's definitely an Aussie banger, with the IS plates on her. So musta been a self steer thing or home built eh.
Never heard of anything that old with self steer before! Would have been pretty radical in the day I reckon. Funny how everything old is new again isn't it.
Here's another one of Dads old pics that I got, I know it's Saturday, but it was Friday yesterday, so thats pretty close eh..
Have a great weekend, everyone.
Cheers
Rich

Self steer trailers in Australia were that old, spread axle days

From 1973

Waddya reckon on the pic of the red LPS 1418? Was the trailer a closed bogie that old mate shoved another axle in front of? Or was she a widepread, with another axle behind? Looks like a good old bit of bush ingenuity, anyways....

Neither, looks like a self steer trailer to me

Fruehauf did make some odd axle spacings when tri's first came out

But this is like a self steer copied from NZ, Freighter and Fruehauf both had a crack in Australia at sekf steer trailers back in the wide spread bogie days

I'm thinking that might be a NewZealand photo though, but they (the Kiwi jokers) had different types of tarping than Australia

So all we can do is guess

Some flash jiggers their Rich

Paul

It's an Australian Photo Paul.. !!!

In the Latest edition of the Gearchange magazine there's an article on the working Life of the Bloke who bought that Truck New. He spent most of his working Life running Melbourne Adelaide. That Pic & many others are in the Article
There's no mention of a self steering Axle ..

Good info everyone, it might just a unusual axle spacing, this wasn't that uncommon when tri axle trailers hit the seen, we have touched on that subject a few times over the years

I wonder if it start as a normal bogie axle and maybe had a air axle added later, no matter Im only guessing and you all know I don't me bum from my elbow

Any chance of sending the article my way Seed ?

So Frauline Friday is upon us all again

I only have a couple this week

First I believe is a Brian Lawler photo

Next is a Jeremy Kelly photo, I think it is anyway

What a weapon the last one is

Have a great weekend everyone

Hi Mrs Mac. Back in 1968 I worked at Coca Cola ; them days they had a distribution centre in Waterloo in Sydney where they delivered the the Coca Cola to the shops in the city and sorounding suburbs like Surry hills and eastern suburbs .The Coke was bought in by Semi trailer from the main factory at Kingsgrove ; first off they had D Series Fords with V8 Cummins prime movers then they took delivery of I think was 3 or 4 1418 Benzes and the drivers loved them & could no get out of the Fords quick enough to drive them .They looked very smart painted Red with the white wave logo on the side one driver commented they have got to be good to have 3 windscreen wipers LOL. ps those days the coke was in wooden crates with two crate sizes one for the small cokes &the King size & one for the Family sized bottles so a full trailer was up on its weight. maybe somebody out there has a photo off one .

That Benz with the spuds on would know she's alive eh... Lots of gearchanges going on there. I remember sitting with Dad in the old 1418's, any sort of side or headwind would just kill them, the old man would be sitting there swearing at "this bloody truck" as he went from high fifth back to high fourth, at about 60k's per hour, flat to the boards.....

Paul

PM Me your email address & I'll see what I can do..!

Just send it this Seed,
mrsmackpaul@gmail.com

It'll find me, and if I get some joker telling me I have rich uncle that just popped his clogs and they wanna send it to me, so much the better

Swanny I amazed at just how many of the 1418 benzs there were
From big fleets to owner operators
They were everywhere and like so many other things, virtually vanished over night

I'll keep my eyes peeled for so Fraulines in Coke colours

Rich I remember some the loads of spuds we sent off when I was a kid
One bloke would stack them up each side and a row of gas bottles in the middle were the bags went long ways

As the trailers got bigger the little 1418 stayed the same size

A little truck with a big heart, or at least that is my memory of them

My tri axle stock trailer had a 1418 benz hooked to the front from new, a very steady load even when empty, let alone with 4 decks of sheep
Sadly I can't find any photos of it

This Mack has one of those spread tri-axles- looks like the front of the 3 is on air bags.
