you know it's a funny thing about this subject and it parallels the very first holden car produced at fishermans bend in 1948 and with none other than body number 6!!
the bodies were produced at woodville SA...but they were completed into assembled cars at fishermans bend in victoria
so the first assembled holden had, in fact the sixth body produced for manufacture .
cheers

This is looking like a good story developing, I'm keenly intersted. Funny isn't it, the KW factory in VIC, and it's great to see a lot of memories from a lot of blokes on the forum.
The Mack and White factories were both in Brisbane, and if you strike the right blokes they can give you a lot of history. Unfortunatly most of them aren't on the forum, or are computer literate.

As I said, need to check my facts first but I would have thought others had already been down this path.

Some would say that KW are still out by 2 chassis numbers as to which was first delivered in Oz.

lets not forget that kwikasair/alltrans was very high profile for the kenworth camp, so as you say...what went out the door earlier albeit with a lower profile??

Right customer but .........?

Funny you mention 6
Reading between the lines of all the above
& having a WAG
I think, Jimbo51 thinks that possibly/maybe 400006 may have been placed in service within the TNT/Alltrans group without fanfare. Prior to official delivery of #400008.
Alledgedly
But i might just be putting 2 & 2 together & getting 6

I suspect order or chassis number wasn't an issue back then. They rolled out a completed Grey Ghost at the plant to the media and it could have been any one of a number in the first batch.
The actual chassis number only became an issue 30 odd years down the track when they found 400008, which was one of the first batch, and chose to restore it and display it. Then it became convenient to say IT was the first.
Just speculation as to how it happened.
Someone may have factory records to show which one was first released to the dealer otherwise I'd reckon we go by which one was first to be delivered to the customer.
Definition of "first" will always be subjective.
