Often it's about not wanting to provide the competition with an opportunity to get a leg in. For example if Toll didn't buy it, then Linfox might, and that gives Linfox a leg into an area they aren't in already. I know this type of practice goes on between the big supermarkets. You might see for example 2 Coles in the one shopping centre. Its not that they make more money from having the 2, its that they block Woollies from opening up there in the empty shop.

Ah, that makes a ruthless kind of sence.

If you cant make the money yourself, keep someone else from making it (or eating the rice from your bowl).

I won't comment on your Coles/Woolies analogy - it makes excellent sence but my opinions about anti-competitive tradeing would be off topic and "shareing the load" is only meant to go so far.
(Swineish Capitalist bastards.)

Thanks IHScout for the explanation. I get it now. >:(

I agree with you Bobsboy and I'll go further even though it's off topic....
Coles and Woolies have far too much say in Australian life AND the transport industry!!
Think about it..
If you eat, drink or drive a car they've pretty much got you.. :(

Although not strictly a Transport Co. (more a shipping co.)
I did subbie for them in the early 90s

They didn't have any Co. trucks in Melbourne at least and the only pic I could find on the net was a very grainy one.
Did have a couple of painted Subbies one ex Ansett Slimline comes to mind (Gidday Pete) and old Tony with the B model. :)

Porky's Pick-ups, ya ya I remember him.
A friend of a friend, one guy and a small truck. Post cyclone, when all sorts of people did all sorts of different things to scratch together some kind of living.

Darwin was still getting itself together after Tracy, and you could do pretty much anything you said you could do. (I had a box of tools and because mechanics had tools, I was a mechanic. ;D) Not.
But that didn't matter much at the time.

Porky, (and he was) from memory, was offered at little or no cost, a big brand company name from some southern mob (not KwikasAir or FedEx but something like that) and then either became the Darwin manager of their opperation, drove for them, or took it on as his own. I dont actually know the last bit but it was something good like that.

Post Tracy Darwin, ah, "those were the days".
Youth, lots of beer, lots of work, a city to rebuild and we were all quietly proud to be part of something special,(rude word you Tracy, we're here, we're staying and it will be bigger and better than it ever was) And it is. Bigger, better and very much different, but still there. Ah Darwin. . . half a long lifetime ago, but I still love ya.

Porky's Pick-ups, ya ya I remember him.
