OK finish is good and I think dimensions too. Big problem (or not?) I've noticed is the original turbo pins have a small oil hole in the middle, these NAs don't. Can't see what the hole would be for - why would they need hole going down the bore of the pin? I can't see what difference it makes but it must be there for a reason. Can anyone shed any light?

Parts are:

pins
retainers
liner o rings
full gasket kit

con rod bolts
big ends
Mains and thrusts were confirmed perfect by the grinder and a the bearings have <300 hrs on them are good to use. Just need to finish cleaning pistons and hone liners, sort out head gear etc..

Once I've got the block cleaned up and liners sorted out I'll slot them in and measure up for heights. I was led to believe they're not normally needed but would you say they are?

Well experience might say that a 'prompt' regarding Liner Shims could convey that they may possibly be required for correct assembly.
Didn't look like there was any on the parts list and in general, they are not an item hanging on everyones shed wall..
In a perfect world, they may not be required...but the correct liner height is required for correct component operation. They are terribly difficult to acquire on a casual Saturday afternoon assembly day..
Usually not something you can hack out of a dog food tin...
Like most things, you are better off lookin at them , than looking for them..
Please take the comment as a constructive observation....
Practical experience will beat bullshit hands down everytime.

Sure, I agree. But don't I need to measure them first to work out what I need? Or do they come in one size and you stack them?
Just read the manual on the subject - it states you try different liners in different holes and if you can't get 0.050" to 0.0465" below block with less than 0.0015" between adjacent liners you need to replace - no mention of shims. So are shims an aftermarket thing, or did they get brought in later and my manual doesn't cover them. Or are they a 71/92 only thing? I've heard of them but searching on google only brings up shims for 71s.
EDIT - pretty sure they're a 71 only thing. Hmm, hope mine line up ok... I do have a few to choose from - 12 or 18 if I can be bothered pulling the last 6. Although, why couldn't you turn your own shims to suit? Is there some reason you can't in a 53? Or lap them in a bit maybe?

So the GM has its liners 45 -50 thou below deck height?
Haven't come across that before, usually 0 to 2 thou above deck.
Guess the head gasket has some sort of sealing ring built in?

They're called fire rings (I think - or is that the top compression ring>)- more like a metal sandwich... Then o rings for oil and water galleries - everything is individual, there's no one "head gasket"
