Had a UC Sunbird too ( the spud peelers ride). first Holden I ever had that wore a thrust face out on the crankshaft.

Agree the Frog carb was something else, other than that it was NOT that bad.

I notice a few of you had FX/FJ Holdens. The only one I had was an ex-PMG ute which I used to drive to school (unlicensed) when I was 16.

Point of the post is, I had a ride in an original one yesterday for the first time in 50 years and I was totally underwhelmed. How they sold so many of them against treasures such as the Austin A40, Morris Oxford, Ford Pilot/Consul and other gems has me beat. Boy, we had low standards! Driving a cheap old car when you are a teenager is one thing but somebody paid good money to buy these things new.

I overtook one the other day, 110 zone Northern NSW and pouring rain.
I’d forgotten about the woeful vacuum wipers, poor bugger would have been better off with his head out the window.
Can’t agree about the Austin, Morris etc cars though.
Austin A40 brakes??? Now there’s an oxymoron.

Jeffo

The description of the pommy cars as "gems" was tongue in cheek to demonstrate the low standard of competition.

My FJ had its handbrake cables tie wired to the chassis, not even connected.
Was just as good like that.
Cars of that era.........not the best.
And the A40 with cable rears and hydraulic fronts, what were they thinking.

Yeah mate, it started playin' up just after leavin' the yard, but l didn't go back ta get it fixed as l needed ta get home and get ready ta go ta work that night, as it wasn't ready until very late arvo. My dad had ta tune it up the next arvo after he got home from work. When it ran good, it ran good, but could run crap at the drop of a hat and was the reason for much swearin' from my dad over the time as he was the mechanic more than me!

That's true, mate...There's Honest Ern, who's honest, and then there's Honest Ern, who's a shyster..... I worked for his nephew for 7 years, and his father, who'd been mates with my dad for about 60 or so years, tried to set me up for stealin' money. 5 cent coins that he reckoned he put in vaccum cleaners to find out where they were goin,
