Bono,
The AFA 100 stepped king pins have a set of small rubbing pads between the bottom of the king pin and the bottom cap.
Often the shims associated with the pads end up getting lost with the old grease when being disassembled.
The purpose of these is to obtain the correct amount of friction in the steering.
This is obtained by increasing or decreasing shims at the bottom of the rubbing pads.
To set them up you need to shim the king pin up until there is no play.

Hi Barry,

Lucky i posted, didnt know which way to go. Forgot the felt washer, can it be cut and taped around? else i have to remove. Might be pushing my luck but is there any diagram i can look at for spring scale otherwise i will try and go off your intstructions.

Thanks,

Bono,
Unfortunatly the felt seal is there for an important reason so I would do it properly.
The instructions I posted are straight out of the manual.
If you send me an email off forum I will send you a page from the manual....Ive lost your email address.
If you have trouble over the weekend setting it up ring me on:
0438 186 836 and I can talk you through it. Tackle shop is a good place to start for a set of spring scales that will work in the 5 - 15 range.

Barry,

Worked like a charm. Alll done by the book. No up and down movement
so it looks good. Reline the brakes while the wheels off. Thanks for your help on this, made things alot easier

Yeah they should be no problem, got a mate who aprenticed in Swan hill, so has worked on one or two before. Not with this pin set up but bearings and brakes adjust i dont think will be an issue.

I did want to confirm one thing. when i went to adtrans they had to blow off the rivets, and seperate from the backing plate - they didnt bolt it back together for me - not part of the quote. Only found out when i picked it up.

I've used WT hi tensile bolts but not sure if its the rating i need. Any advice would be appreciated.

Bono,
This is normal having to take the rivets out. Shame they didnt tell you though.
Use good quality grade 8 UNF bolts and nuts + spring washer.
I suggest you dont use nyloc nuts as they arnt high tensile.
