Medium Rigid (MR)

To apply for this category you must have held an Australian car driver licence for at least 12 months.

Heavy Rigid (HR)
You may drive any rigid vehicle with three or more axles, including bus or truck, greater than 8 tonnes GVM. You may tow a single trailer (other than a semi trailer) up to 9 tonne GVM or to the manufacturer's specifications (whichever is less).

Now to throw another spanner in the works - when we go "Haulin' The Hume" next month in our HISTORIC registered trucks, do we need to FILL IN the diary? I always carry it, but have been advised (verbally) by the RTA that we do not need to fill them in.
Comment!!! Rod.

Not sure what the reg's are in NSW but assume would be similar. But the situation is pretty clear and has been discussed a number of times already on the forum.

In Victoria the legislation does not Exempt Historic Commercial Vehicles from filling in the Work diaries. If your vehicle fits the requirements for the work diary if it was fully reg it will still need it when Historic Reg.

It is interesting to note that a Vicroads rep visited a HCVC meeting a while back and investigated the question for us. Everyone he asked at Vicroads including the enforcement guys also assumed Historic were exempt. But the legislation as written is very clear and has No exemptions allowed. All vehicles meeting the requirements of Log Book must have a log book. Doesn't matter registration or Permit types.

So any body from Victoria with Historic vehicles must fill in their Permit Book and if required workers Diary. For example if I was to go with ACCO and trailer both historic permited. Each day I would need to fill in the two permit books (one for truck and one for trailer) then the worker diary for me as required.

Oh and to clarify another point in a previous post in this topic. It is based on the GVM or GCM of the vehicle. NOT the current weight of the vehicle. So even if I was take the ACCO up without trailer or load because it has a GVM/GCM over the requirement for a log book I would still need to fill it in.

If in doubt fill it in! Better than not fill it in and get caught!

After reading 50 thousand of the same questions about the requirements for drivers of 'club' plate vehicles....
log book requirement?
licenses?
roadworthyness..?

Isn't it high time for someone from each state or territory to finally get something in writing covering these matters??
If there isn't a rule book handed out with 'club' plates....
then its time there was!
All this verbal stuff will turn to something else, when someone has a mishap....

It won't be any good saying ol mate on the forum said...

thats my two bobs worth for what its worth....

Chocs,

Good question.

Problem is each state is a little different. In Victoria their was a booklet available from the various car clubs. But due to the recent changes it has to be re-written now as some of the rules have changed.

The other problem is that majority of the people that want club plates don't need to worry about anything more than a car!

These reasons is it is best for people that are interested in Historic trucks and other commercials should join a club that specialises in the commercial vehicle. And is as local as possible to them. ((start Advert) Such as the HCVC for Victoria and SA (end advert!)). Their is at least one in nearly every state now. Each of these clubs would have people that can answer many of these types of questions for their state.

Or of course they can ask it here on the forum. But be aware in many cases we are only explaining it as we see the situation sometimes it is better to do the hard yards and either read the regs or get the info from the appropriate authorites (in writting as verbelly you may get an opinion instead of what the regs really says!) :D
