I have used one of these many times to determine where a noise is coming from.

Or a long screwdriver will do if you haven't got one, but the stethoscope is better.

You can't have too many toys!

Cheers Oliver, that would come in handy.

Fan belt seemed ok but gave it a bit more tension and the noise seems to be gone. Should have thought to check it but thanks for prompting me mammoth. It all makes sense now I think of it, I had been spraying WD40 about the place too when it was a bit windy. So I think I’m back on track which is a relief.

Worn timing gears can cause a knock ,and the 300 engines were also known for cracked pistons.......although its so long ago ,Ive forgotten the details.

A good back stop for the stethoscope is a length of garden hose.

Earlier this year I purchased a used 16CFM compressor that was "faulty".

The ad said it gets up to 40psi then makes a screaming noise.

Got it for bugger all money, brought it home adjusted the fanbelt and it's good as gold.

Funny thing is the guy selling it was a mechanic

Cheers cobbadog, a piece of garden hose could save the day at some point.

JOHN.K, I’ve had the head off and the pistons where all good at that time. Haven’t looked at the timing gears though. It’s from the front so they could be causing it, I’ll cut some of cobbadog’s garden hose and see what I can hear.

Zuffen, sounds like you scored there. I’m no mechanic, but if I was one I hope I’d have picked up on that before selling it. I’ve learnt so much doing this project so far. Some are all but life lessons.

Make sure you use the best and most flexible piece of garden hose as once they age they are not as flexible and awkward to use.

P.S. Notice I avoided using the term 'gets stiff' when describing the hose and age. I have to be careful around you lot!

Cheers cobbadog, I’ll be sure it’s flexible. On my first post I almost made reference to cutting up garden hoses but stayed away from it. :blink:

Today I tidied up the tray removing redundant pieces and welding things back to where they should be. I also made the chassis rail spacers, took longer then I care to admit. They turned out ok but I haven’t installed them yet which will be the true test, that should be happening Friday. No one around me has the right u-bolts or correct length bolts so I’m going to use threaded rod, I’ll weld the top nut to the rod. Spoke to the nut and bolt shop and they said high tensile rod is all but as good as bolts. I’ll see how it goes.



I’ve tracked down a steering wheel the same as mine which looks to be in better condition. It still needs work but from the photos it appears to be an easier fix. It comes with its column and indicator gear too so that will be handy to just have if ever needed.

Once the steering wheel is sorted that will be all the major pieces of the puzzle gathered. There is still a couple odds and ends but I’m not concerned of them holding me up. Fingers crossed mid December the 250 will hit the highways once again.

Mine doesn't, it has gone soft and useless with age.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!
